Ontario Health, in collaboration with CritiCall Ontario, has updated the neurosurgical guidelines to support evidence-based (modified Brain Injury Guideline – mBIG) management of adult traumatic brain injury (TBI).

The pathway supports Emergency Department (ED) clinicians in the assessment and management of adult patients presenting with low-risk traumatic brain injury. Eligible, low acuity adult brain trauma patient care may be supported by an ED Peer physician who will be providing real-time coaching and mentoring, clinical decision support, and guidance on the application of mBIG criteria for Ontario patients.

Intercranial hemorrhage, brain tumour and spinal cord injury guidelines are under revision.

The ‘Cervical Collar Care and Management’ document, developed by the provincial Neurosurgery and Education Outreach Network (NEON), provides information to assist Health Care Professionals (HCPs) across Ontario to care for patients who need a cervical collar. The resource provides information to assist the HCP to identify indications for cervical collar use, understand the different types of cervical collars, and maintain and address the complications that may arise with the use of a cervical collar. The resource also summarizes the importance of involving patients and their care partners in education and care of the collars.

Rising Intracranial Pressure (ICP) is a primary concern of any injury or disease state involving the components of the cranial vault. Injuries or conditions that can cause these internal mechanisms to fail have the potential for a fatal outcome if not identified early, acted upon quickly and managed effectively. The presentation “Intracranial Pressure: Causes, Concerns and Management” helps nurses and other frontline staff to identify the injuries and disease processes that may cause intracranial pressure to rise. The Ontario Trauma Registry (OTR) Data Dictionary was developed in collaboration with the Trauma Registry Advisory Committee (TRAC). It provides standardized guidance for entering a comprehensive trauma dataset into the OTR. The dictionary defines each data element—including its definition, format, and coding instructions—and serves as a key reference to ensure accurate and consistent data entry. It is updated annually to reflect changes in the trauma system or reporting requirements.Trauma data is entered into the OTR by Ontario’s 11 Lead Trauma Hospitals—9 adult centres and 4 paediatric centres (with 2 hospitals combining adult and paediatric services under a single corporate entity)—along with 6 Level III Trauma Centres. This data is used at the provincial, regional, and hospital levels to monitor performance and identify opportunities for efficiencies, quality improvement, and innovation in trauma care delivery.

Le présent document a pour objet de donner des exemples de critères cliniques pour aider les médecins orienteurs et les médecins-conseils à tenir rapidement des conversations sur les soins aux nouveau-nés et aux personnes enceintes en accouchement en phase critique, y compris lorsque les nouveau-nés devraient avoir besoin d’un niveau de soins plus élevé.
