Patient and Family Partnerships
Enabling Patient and Family Partnerships in Ontario’s Critical Care System
The need for a systematic, locally appropriate, and standardized approach to advancing patient and family partnerships was clearly identified by the critical care system and reflected as a key goal within the Ontario Critical Care Plan, 2018 – 2021.
To improve critical care experiences and outcomes for patients and families, the Critical Care Experience Improvement Framework guides local and system level initiatives.

Family Satisfaction in the Intensive Care Unit (FS-ICU) Initiative
The Family Satisfaction in the Intensive Care Unit (FS-ICU) initiative is a joint collaboration between Critical Care Services Ontario (CCSO) and The Ottawa Hospital, and is funded by the Ontario Ministry of Health. The FS-ICU Initiative involves the implementation of an electronic version of the FS-ICU Survey and Analytics Tools. It will provide local adult, paediatric, and neonatal ICUs with a mechanism to receive continuous feedback on family satisfaction while also facilitating the analysis of provincial and regional metrics to support system-level patient and family experience improvement across Ontario.
As part of the FS-ICU initiative, a three-month pilot was conducted in 2018 across 18 level 3 medical-surgical ICUs. This initiative is being scaled to all adult, paediatric, and neonatal ICUs in Ontario. For more information, please email PREF@CCSO.ca.
The FS-ICU initiative is formerly known as PREF initiative, and this language may be found in some resources.
