Patient and Family Partnerships

Enabling Patient and Family Partnerships in Ontario’s Critical Care System

Collecting patient and family satisfaction data is essential for improving hospital care and it supports a patient-centred approach. It helps healthcare providers identify areas for improvement, address concerns, and enhance the overall patient experience through the alignment of services to meet their needs and expectations.

The Care Satisfaction in the Intensive Care Unit (CS-ICU) survey is a tool designed to measure the satisfaction of patients and their families with the care provided in the ICU. It gathers feedback on various aspects of the ICU experience, including communication, support, and overall quality of care. The survey aims to help hospitals assess and improve the patient-family experience, identify areas for enhancement, and promote a more patient-centered approach to care in intensive care settings.

In 2024, the Ontario Hospital Association (OHA) partnered with Critical Care Services Ontario (CCSO) to adapt, operationalize, and streamline the CS-ICU survey into the OHA-led Patient Experience Management program. The CS-ICU survey enables hospitals to capture feedback from patients and their families across Adult, Neonatal and Pediatric ICUs.
