Building an integrated, accessible, inclusive and sustainable provincial trauma system
The Trauma and Burns Program aims to develop an integrated, accessible, inclusive and sustainable provincial trauma system, and to reduce death and disability related to injury. To achieve this, CCSO works in collaboration with system partners, including Lead Trauma Hospitals, Burn Centres, Emergency and Air Transport, Injury Prevention, CritiCall Ontario, the Ministry of Health, and Regional Trauma Networks.
The Trauma and Burns System is comprised of 8 Regional Trauma Networks which encompass 11 Lead Trauma Hospitals, of which three are provincial Burn Centres. The Regional Trauma Networks are a hub-and-spoke model linking Lead Trauma Hospitals, referring hospitals, and other trauma system partners to improve trauma care delivery and service in the region. The Regional Trauma Network model provides the building blocks for an inclusive trauma system.

The Burn Management Checklists support clinicians at referring hospitals in managing patients with burn injuries closer to home. These checklists are meant to aid in clinical decision-making and are not a replacement for a consultation with a burn surgeon/centre facilitated by CritiCall Ontario.
Ontario Trauma Centres: Minimum Standards define expectations for adult and paediatric level I, level II, and level III trauma centres regarding their system role, capacity, and capabilities.
These Guidelines are meant to facilitate consultations and/or transfers to a Burn Centre and should be applied using clinical judgement. Final decision to transfer remains at the discretion of the referring and receiving physicians.
